%latex -v
pdfTeX 3.141592-1.40.3-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.6)
kpathsea version 3.5.6


I have them too (so latex prints pdftex version as well) but if I run
latex foo.tex I get foo.dvi rather than foo.pdf. Check if you are
getting dvi file
