Did you install all the i-Packages corresponding to the dependencies
of autotrace? There seem to be a fair number of them (pstoedit,
ImageMagick, libpng, FreeType). From the ReadMe of the autotrace i-
Package:

2006/04/27:
• Linked dynamically against pstoedit
2006/04/20:
• Linked dynamically against ImageMagick 2.6.2-8 (libMagick.10.dylib)
2006/04/06:
• Linked statically against libpng-1.2.8.
2006/02/28:
• Check for availability of required X11 install
2006/01/25:
• First fat release (i386 and ppc).
2006/01/01:
• Recompiled against ImageMagick 6.2.5-5. Tell autotrace i-Package it
depends on libMagick.9.dylib instead of libMagick.6.dylib
2005/07/04:
• Tell autotrace i-Package it depends on libfreetype.6.dylib instead
of libfreetype.dylib
• Autotrace 0.31.1 contains a broken test in configure for the
version of ImageMagick. I have worked around this bug.

That said, personally I find the output of potrace more satisfactory
than that of autotrace.

FWIW,
