[OS X TeX] Why so severe?

I tried

\documentclass[11pt]{article}
\begin{document}
\input test
\input{test}
\end{document}

where the file test.tex contains only the word "test", on both PPC  
and Intel Macs, with both gwTeX (latest version) and TeXlive-2007  
(the dev version at <http://www.tug.org/mactex/morepackages.html>).

In all cases the file typesets just fine. This is with Mac OS X  
10.4.9 and TeXShop 2.10 beta 8.

What are the details of your setup, are they any different? And when  
TeXShop freezes, is there something special written to console.log  
and to ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/TeXShop.crash.log? Both can be  
inspected conveniently using /Applications/Utilities/Console.
