It's hard to parse a LaTeX file and be flexible about what's  
correct.  Whenever I'm not sure how to handle something, I use  
Lamport as a guide.  For example, LaTeX allows

\newcommand\foo{bar}

but Lamport (page 92) says don't do that, use this instead

\newcommand{\foo}{bar}

Excalibur insists on the latter.
