Multi-distribution woes (was: Re: [OS X TeX] Font tmmath install problems with new gwtex. Please help.)

Hello happy TeX'ers.

I'm facing again a situation that confounds me.

Thanks to the kind help of some of the contributers to this list
(esp. Herbert Schultz), I was able to sort out the problems I had
with some fonts after installing GWTex using i-installer.

Today I decided to install gnuplot using darwinports (sudo /opt/local/
bin/port install gnuplot). Watching the install proceed, I noticed
that it also decided to install TeTeX (which had been previously
installed before installing GWTeX). This evidently changed the
distribution I'm using from GWTeX to this one. Executing "which
kpsewhich" now gives:

gary-churchs-computer:~ gary$ which kpsewhich
/opt/local/bin/kpsewhich

whereas before (after installing GWTeX) it gave:

>> gary-churchs-computer:~ gary$ which kpsewhich
>> /usr/texbin/kpsewhich

Also, "sudo texhash" now gives:

gary-churchs-computer:~ gary$ sudo texhash
Password:
texhash: Updating /Users/gary/.texmf-config/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /Users/gary/.texmf-var/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /opt/local/share/texmf/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /opt/local/share/texmf-config/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /opt/local/share/texmf-dist/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /opt/local/share/texmf-local/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /opt/local/share/texmf-var/ls-R...
texhash: Done.

And, noticeably, ~/Library/texmf/, is left out from the directories
in texhash so that packages in that branch aren't being found.

So, here I am again, hat in hand, asking for the kind help of members
of this list.

How can I get the GWTeX to be the distribution that is being used?
BTW, the "TeX Distribution" item in the System Preferences Pane only
lists GWTeX as a system wide TeX distribution (and the sole radio
button is selected).

Thanks again for any help or advice you can provide,
Gary.
