Start w/ the Memoir manual and the documentation for the Geometry and  
octavo packages.
Look up recent writings in TUGboat, esp. Pablo Gonzalez's Classics

Alan Hoenig's book _TeX Unbound_ has some discussion of this sort of  
thing as well.
