[OS X TeX] Beamer class bibitems

Greetings everyone,

I am working on a presentation with the Beamer Class. In the  
documentation
there is a sample how to make some bibitems and refer to them as  
usual with
\cite...
But the class resolves the \cite{...}  commands to [1], [2] and so  
on, but in the
appendix they appear with document pictures. Is there a way to label  
them
with text line [1] or [RFC1234] or sth. ?

Maybe a very fundamental question ? :-(
