Cha-ching!  It dawned on me right after I wrote my original msg that  
an errant cache might be the source of the problem.  Not being sure  
where in ~/Library/Caches the font caches were I just clobbered  
(actually, moved) the entire directory (and created a new empty Caches  
dir) and that did the trick.

Ah -- I didn't think of looking for a dedicated utility.  No doubt a  
better approach than my Draconian kill-a-fly-with-a-sledgehammer  
solution. :-)
