Done! Thanks a lot! In fact, I saw that I could download ``a tarball  
from the ViewVC interface at http://scripts.sil.org/svn-view/xetex/ 
TRUNK'', and that's what I did; then I ran the two scripts you  
mention, and now I have xetex 0.997!

Thanks also for pointing out about fontspec, because I had one in my  
$HOME tree, newer than the one in TeXLive, but older than the one  
just built.
