Yes, I've done this but it has some drawbacks and it has not become
part of my standard workflow:
1. When you change the page size to be just big enough for the
graphic, Illustrator positions the page not around the graphic but in
the middle of the window. Then you have to move the graphic into the
page, manually.
2. If you have graphics that contain arrows and you move them as a
group while working with the "snap to grid" option on, the alignment
with grid is messed up. That's because lines with arrows that were
lying along grid lines before the move are placed in between gridlines.
3. If the graphic grows in size, you need to manually readjust the
size of the page.
