I think it is as simple as opening up an editor such as TeXShop,  
typing something along the lines of:

---- snip

\title{My exegesis}
\author{John Doe}

---- snip

You save the file, make sure "LaTeX" is set as the menu next to the  
Typeset button, then press "Typeset".

You should be able to find more information about your distribution  
by visiting the file:

in your web browser.
