[OS X TeX] strange beamer happening

While using beamer I wanted to express the thought $p \ne 0$, but
I just got $\ne$. So I typed

$a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z$

and found that the letter p, and no others, is missing in math mode.  
I typed

$1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0$

and found that the number 0, and no others, is missing in math mode.
(Both characters occur in non-math mode.)

What could be wrong?
