Oh well, this is not meant to make me optimistic. But if I am reading  
the news about texlive2008 correctly, we will soon have a built-in  
update mechanism independent of mpm.
Still, it is a bit of a pain in the a** since mpm based on 2.6 used  
to work kind of well...
