Howdy,

Since updating of CTAN servers is asynchronous it may take a day or  
two for the server you are attached to to get a particular update. You  
shouldn't have to worry about incompatible updates since dependency  
information is contained in updates. Of course if that information is  
wrong or you update a package that is not part of TeX Live (e.g.,  
biblatex) there may be a version incompatibility (I had that happen,  
for one day with biblatex).

Just to let you know, after doing an update just now I ran the command  
and got 1790 too.
