You should have put the files in /usr/local/texlive/texmf.local  
following the TDS convention (which you did when installing in ~/ 
Library). After that :

sudo texhash
sudo updmap-sys --enable Map mathabx.map

should to the job. If you really can't compile, use pdflatex and add  
the following line in the preambule of your file :

\pdfmapfile{+ mathabx.map}

This will enable pdflatex to use mathabx.map when compiling this file  
(and only this one). If there's a warning about duplicate map files,  
this line is not necessary.
