Howdy,

Maybe mptopdf is bad? Subscribe to the metapost list (again, assuming  
the mptopdf is part of metapost) and find out there.

You might try to update tlmgr (part of MacTeX/TeX Live 2008) and then  
update the TeX distribution. Lots of files have been updated since  
MacTeX/TeX Live 2008 came out. Go to <http://mactex-wiki.tug.org/wiki/index.php?title=Image:TlmgrMacTeX.pdf&page=1 
 > and click on the page image and the TlmgrMacTeX.pdf file will  
download. Follow the directions there to update the system.
