[OS X TeX] %18 or 18% : incorrect placement of the percentage sign ?

I asked an Egyptian friend of mine in graduate school about this, and  
his immediate response was that it should be placed on the left. There  
may be some difference between Egyptian arabic and other forms of  
arabic, but he didn't seem to make any distinction of such a custom.
