Dear Holger,

On my machine I get this in the log file:

--
LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `OT1/lmr/bx/sc' undefined
(Font) using `OT1/lmr/bx/n' instead on input line 29.

[1{/Users/matthew/.texlive2007/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/
pdftex.map}]
(./bold_small_caps.aux)

LaTeX Font Warning: Some font shapes were not available, defaults
substituted.

OT1/lmr/bx/sc is what you wanted: latin modern, bold weight, sc
shape. It's just not there. LaTeX substitutes the normal shape
instead. So as a reasonable failsafe, it is "supposed" to be like that.

So if you want latin modern bold small caps, you'll have to roll your
own, I guess. I think this is a job for virtual fonts, but there are
many wiser than I that can answer that directly.

Grüße aus einem shreckliche regnerische Boston,
Matt
