[OS X TeX] Floating table in landscape orientaton results in a half empty page

Indeed.
This is what {landscape} is designed for.
It modifies the "output routine" to achieve this.
Namely it sets wide material rotated to fit on a portrait
page, when printed. But it also declares that page to be
rotated to landscape orientation ...

... within a PDF-viewer that supports it.

It first finishes the current page, then outputs the special page,
then continues. There is no aspect that resembles floating.

It could have ben done differently, but isn't.
