This can't be the cause – because of two reasons: the directory tree  
certainly was created when Mac TeX was configured after installation,  
and secondly the updmap script checks (with line numbers):

     833     test -d "$d" || abort "output directory \`$d' does not  
exist"
     834     test -w "$d" || abort "output directory \`$d' is not  
writable"

Well, it's not exactly the text Franck posted ... at least it makes  
the mystery bigger!
