Pete,
my guess is that he means he had trouble installing a _LyX_layout_
for a LaTeX style file. That would be something the LyX-users mailing
list can help with. As far as the LaTeX side is concerned, all one
has to do in LyX is choose "Tools > TeX Information > Rescan" after
installing a new package. The LyX layout files are additional "sugar"
to help LyX act more WYSIWYG by adapting the screen display to your
desired LaTeX style. There are many of them available, even for the
beamer class. But it's true that by far not all styles have
accompanying LyX layouts.
