Of course, if you take it that way, there is nothing I can respond.
Joke apart, I had put
\newlength{\foo}
on top, completely forgotten about
\settoheight{\foo}{$\dfrac{x}{x-1}$}
and just supposed I should eyeball things and replace \foo by
whatever would look good (\left.\rule{0mm}{4mm}\right| seemed good
enough in the event.)
But I did wonder about the need for
\newlength{\foo}
However, this being early (for me) morning, I didn't worry and was
happy just being able to control the height of the vertical bar.
