[OS X TeX] Bib formatting? Not apalike?

This is probably an easy question, but I can't seem to find it
anywhere....

When I type \cite{tag} I get text that looks like this: Smith (2003)

The year is in parentheses, so I often end up with text that looks
like this in the document:
The data was great (Smith (2003); Jones (2004)).

I would like:
The data was great (Smith, 2003; Jones, 2004).

Is there a way to get bibtex to format like this? I'm currently using
these settings:

\usepackage{natbib}
\bibliographystyle{apalike}
\bibliography{bibfile}

TIA,
travis
