Howdy,

So you're NOT installing MacTeX (TeX Live 2008 plus). Do you have /usr/ 
local/texlive/2008/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/tetex/dvips35.map so that  
updmap-sys can create the map file? What is the output of the updmap- 
sys runs? Just for more information, what is the output of

kpsepath tex

to see what paths standard TeX Live look at?
