Which in TeX Live 2007 and 2008 are Perl scripts! They seem to use  
Ghostscript as last resort when in the PS file no BoundingBox  
information is saved – for which the PS file is converted into PPM or  
PBM format that an existing bbox command can determine the  
BoundingBox. Otherwise Ghostscript is used directly with the bbox  
device to determine the BoundingBox. Well, I'd prefer Ghostscript  
before its combination with auxiliary bbox command, but it should all  
simply work. A chance of failure only exists in a defective PS file.

Pdfcrop has one other advantage: it can add a margin around an  
object. When manually cropping an object that gets clipped during  
this, it allows to correct this simply by drawing a safe margin  
around this object. When automatically cropping one can just add a  
margin of a few pixels ...
