[OS X TeX] Stymied by updmap-sys; what's going on?

Tom,

this is *not* correct! The files builtin35.map and download35.map are  
files created by updmap or updmap-sys. Try

	egrep '(builtin|download)35' `which updmap`

Tmfonts.map obviously is the MAP file fragment to support the tm*  
fonts. Every time the MAP files are updated, builtin35.map and  
download35.map will again contain the mappings for the tm* fonts as  
long as tmfonts.map is enabled!

what makes the tm* fonts superior over mathptmx (see 'texdoc psnfss2e')?
