Roberto,

you need the right PPD file for your printer. This file will have the  
proper PS commands to switch on or off double sided printing, which  
is a hardware feature and might differ from printer to printer (HP  
might choose its PCL to do this, i.e., without PostScript). To be  
able to print two or four pages on one sheet of paper is simple  
PostScript, which the Mac OS X print dialogue understands and supports.

My PS printer for example also supports to print on recycling paper  
or in one of the resolutions 300, 600, or 1,200 DPI or to choose a  
particular paper input tray and the size of its media ...


When you do not use a PPD file then the OS assumes that you do not  
want to print in PS or PDF and rasterises (creates the pixel surge)  
itself. Usually far away from perfection.
