If you run "xelatex -no-pdf" on your document, to create a  
separate .xdv file, and then run "xdvipdfmx -v XDV-file-name" to  
process it, you'll see any diagnostic messages from the driver; that  
might help explain the problem.

My guess, without having seen the actual PDF file involved, is that it  
uses a newer version of the PDF specification (maybe 1.5) than  
xdvipdfmx supports by default (1.4, I think). You can tell xdvipdfmx  
to accept newer formats by using a flag (I think it's "V") in the  
dvipdfmx.cfg file, but this will also affect the backward- 
compatibility of the generated output.
