[OS X TeX] problem using /opt/local instead of /usr/local/

Herb,
This was the clue/clew which led to the solution.
I installed MacTex 2008 and nothing changed.

I then looked at environment.plist and it had /opt/local/bin
and this was what was causing the problem.
Removing this means I have a properly functioning TexLive installation.

/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf.cnf
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

Thank you to everyone who helped track down the problem.
Christopher

ps. Should someone note this and put it in an FAQ or something?

Howdy,

Oh... one more thing. Do you have a ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist file?
If so, does it set a PATH?

Good Luck,
