Here's a better definition for the  \longitem
macro defined within the PDF attachment of my previous post:

\newcommand{\longitem}[2][-5pt]{%
  \item[\unskip\parbox{\columnwidth}%
   {\addtolength{\baselineskip}{-2pt}\raggedright
    #2\hfil\\[#1]\hss}]\ignorespaces}

This uses \raggedright to avoid too-long word spaces;
viz.
