Howdy,
What engine are you using when you get the jobname.synctex.gz file
generated? If it's something like one of the xe(la)tex engines of
pdflatexmk the option would already be installed there. E.g., if you
are using pdflatexmk take a look at ~/Library/TeXShop/bin/pdflatexmkrc
(a text file) and you'll see that pdflatex as used for latexmk already
has the --synctex=1 option enabled.
