If kernel_task is listed as Intel (64 bit) in Activity Monitor, you're running the 64 bit kernel. It's a waste of time for most people, in my opinion; I can still run 64 bit apps on 10.5 and 10.6 without the 64 bit kernel, and that's what I need.
