I am sure there is an ISO for everything by people who love to make  
rules and these rules can be debated for ever. Even with an upright d  
for the differential and slanted for the variable, the expression dd  
inside an integral would show poor judgement, perhaps even contempt  
for the reader. Ultimately, it is the author's responsibility to make  
the math readable.
