[OS X TeX] defaultscale in Metapost

All,

I'm compiling the attached file with Texshop Metapost. The output is also attached.

Why do the numeric labels get affect by my defaultscale statement yet the cm label does not?

I am using Anthony Phan's stats package at:  http://www-math.univ-poitiers.fr/~phan/statsmac.html
