OK Herb, my path now:

/usr/texbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin

texdoc, texhash and friends now work. Thanks.

Alas, TLU is dead as a dodo/parrot etc. No change here.

Going home soon, so won't be able to test further suggestions on 
this, my office machine, until tomorrow, but keep these coming all 
the same so that I can report tomorrow.
