Howdy,
Take a look at the memoir package documentation, memman.pdf. Part I is
a very well written dissertation on book design.
I don't use the memoir package myself since I mostly write short
articles and letters. The memoir package supposedly can emulate the
article class but I think it does a terrible job since \Chapter is
still defined and must be used as the upper level sectioning command.
