Yes, I remember now. That was with XeTeX coming from teTeX, and it
had been installed with Fink. And it has been noticed that XeLaTeX
from MacTeX/TeX Live 2008 works flawlessly for French accents.
XeTeX/XeLaTeX remains the way to go if someone wants to use system's
fonts directly.
