With lmodern, I get the same error message : ! Package inputenc Error:  
Unicode char \u8:„©l not set up for use with LaTeX.

I checked the sources, nothing is missing. I guess it is some  
invisible character, maybe an end-of-line, which was left there by the  
first conversion latin1 -> mac

The problem seems to occur after \] or \end{align} or \end{something}.  
But not every time these commands are used... I get the same error  
message (same character missing) about 10 or 15 times in the 2,000  
first lines.

I know XeTeX of course, I made some tries. But, today, I have to give  
back a file which was handed to me as a latin1 file, and on which I  
made a lot of work. To save the trouble of changing default encoding  
ten times a day, I converted it to applemac, and now, I am not able to  
convert it back.

(I know, the good way of doing this was to create a new user, which  
works in latin1)
