[OS X TeX] [OT] Unix question cp -aL

Hallo -

does anybody know why on a Mac, the command (bash)

cp -aL balbla blabla

doesn't work? I mean the -aL option? What is it good for?

Sorry for the off-topic question (it is somehow TeX related,  
complicated to explain)
