The soul package for example allows to pack (or to stretch) text by  
using kerning. Instead of "word = something" you could put: "word\;= 
\;something" and also substitute spaces with ~ that you get only one  
unbreakable word. Or use a different font, one that is less space  
eating (for example a "compressed" or "condensed" one). Look  
particularly at the Venturis ADF fonts in TeX Live 2008! /These/ are  
professionals ...
