Click on the left-most character and shift-click on the right-most  
character.

Or click on the right-most character and shift-click on the left-most  
character.

Or click on the left-most character and drag the mouse cursor right to  
the right-most character.

Or click on the right-most character and drag the mouse cursor left to  
the left-most character.

Or click on any of the extreme characters and then move the cursor to  
the other extreme by means of a keyboard short-cut.

You can also select in an LTR (left-to-right) writing environment the  
"zeroth column" below the left-most character and drag the mouse one  
line upwards. Then shift-click the right-most character. (In an RTL  
environment change a bit!)
