Click on the left-most character and shift-click on the right-most
character.
Or click on the right-most character and shift-click on the left-most
character.
Or click on the left-most character and drag the mouse cursor right to
the right-most character.
Or click on the right-most character and drag the mouse cursor left to
the left-most character.
Or click on any of the extreme characters and then move the cursor to
the other extreme by means of a keyboard short-cut.
You can also select in an LTR (left-to-right) writing environment the
"zeroth column" below the left-most character and drag the mouse one
line upwards. Then shift-click the right-most character. (In an RTL
environment change a bit!)

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something
completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete
fools.
