> You're correct! Using TeXLive-2009, use of microtype only increases the size of the document from 1.3 to 1.4 MB (while the number of pages decreases from 171 to 170). I guess I haven't checked this for a long time. Sorry!
At one time pdftex partially embedded each of the expanded fonts which could create a very large file. It hasn't used that method for at least the last two distributions.
