The value of PATH is not that complicated: since MacPorts and Fink  
have newer versions of some of Apple supplied free or GNU software,  
you have just to decide: do I really want all that new stuff? If your  
answer is no, then append /sw/bin (Fink) and/or /opt/local/bin  
(MacPorts) to PATH. Otherwise prepend them.

When you're just interested in *additional* software, then it plays no  
role where you put the additional PATH elements. The new software will  
be found along the new PATH setting.

And you don't have to decide pro this or pro that, both (and other)  
package managers can be used simultaneously, you can decide which  
manager you use to install a particular software, because the one does  
it easier or the other does not need (depend on) so many other  
additional packages.


OTOH, they all produce some trouble when it comes to installing  
additional TeX related software which uses or depends on a TeX  
installation. Then they want to install their own TeX distribution,  
too...
