The GNU "diction" utility catches doubled words. It's also good for checking other things as well (e.g., "which" vs "that", and a whole host of other things). There's also a companion utility called "style" that checks readability according to several standard scales, sentence length, and suchlike.
However, diction is not (La)TeX-aware, which means that you need to de-TeXify the LaTeX source. The problem lies in finding a de-TeXifier that works well enough. Two obvious candidates are "detex" and "dvi2tty".
