[OS X TeX] right (resp. left)

I am pretty sure that
resp.~left
will work too, although additionally it won't allow a break between the two words.
In general,
.\
means "use the inter-word, not inter-sentence, spacing." So, for instance, for use in abbreviations in a sentence.
