[OS X TeX] How do you get a variable width visible space symbol(s)?

Aloha,

I want to denote the different possible latex spaces with a variable width
visible space symbol. Like George Gratzer does in his symbol table (TeXShop
Help Menu). Can someone tell me how to do this?
