I don't think it is uncommon, and it's not that hard ---I use a combination of geometry and crop packages for that. 

And for the bleeding, the package sidecap (even without a caption!) comes handy, as with it ``a wide environment is defined; it allows to use the margin area, e. g., for figures wider than \textwidth''  ---just don't make the image so big as to cover the crop marks. Some manual adjustment might be necessary; for example, for a frontispiece I did
