You're not missing anything, you just have something too much! At  
least I think so. You might have a MAP file in the ~/.texlive2009  
tree. You could check with:

	kpsewhich pdftex.map

or have a closer look in to the last LOG file. A MAP file in the  
~/.texlive2009 tree would come from invoking updmap. 'sudo updmap- 
sys ...' creates files in /usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf-var/fonts/map/ 
*/updmap which come in search precedence after your private files.  
Deletion (or renaming) of the whole ~/.texlive2009 tree is one solution.
