Now, when I first take roll in a class, and since I address my  
students by their last name prefixed with Mr. or Ms, I have to make a  
guess as to the gender of the student whose name I am about to call.  
My strongest rule of thumb is that any student whose first name ends  
with an a is to be addressed as Ms.
