[OS X TeX] Inserting a few words in "non-latin-character" languages

Well, as a result of my clumsy experimentations and after going back  
to the original file, I got

! Package babel Error: You haven't loaded the option english yet.

Type  H <return>  for immediate help.
  ...

l.10 \select at language {english}

and

So, I added

	\usepackage[english,russian]{babel}		

even though I sure didn't have it before and it works.

But what happened and how can I get back to the status quo ante?
